What is Facial Gua Sha?

Getting started

Gua sha is a treatment developed in China thousands of years ago and still used today to help you age beautifully. Regular use of gua sha techniques enlivens your skin from the inside out by calming the mind and stimulating meridian points in the body.

It's an affordable, super simple way to treat boost your overall health and give you that radiant glow. Continue to the lesson to learn about gua sha.

How facial gua sha works

The treatment of the skin known as facial gua sha involves "scraping" the skin with your fingers, hands, or a tool. You do not tear or bruise the skin, but you produce enough pressure to increase the flow of blood and oxygen to the area you "scrape."

What is Your Face Telling You?

Beyond the literal

In Chinese, gua literally means to scrape. Gua sha is a delicate art, based on knowing how to carefully use special stones and other tools to bring blood to the surface of the skin.

Skilled practitioners do not tear or break the skin, but rather press just enough to develop a slightly pink hue on the face, or raise red bumps, almost like a rash, on less delicate parts of the body (these are called sha).

The healing benefits come from drawing the flow of blood and Qi to the areas where you are doing gua sha. Stimluating Meridian points provides additional benefits.

Reading your face – the organs

Ever wondered what dark spots, acne, red marks, etc. on different parts of your face mean? Learn what different areas of your face tell you about the health of your internal organs.

Your face tells a story

In this lesson, you will look at your face in a mirror and draw what you see. No need to be a skilled artist! Just make marks where you see fine lines, deep wrinkles, acne, fatty deposits, loose skin, etc. All of these marks tell you important information about your internal health, emotions, and life experiences.

Learning to read your face

Start your journey to better health through gua sha. In this introductory video, you will learn about meridians, lines of energy that run through your body, including on your face. Explore what your face is telling you and how facial gua sha opens up the meridians for better health and a beautiful glow, inside and out.

Reading your face – ages

Now it's time to analyze your face. In this lesson, you will analyze your face according to the age map.

Reading your face – emotions

Chinese facial reading experts know that wrinkles are more temporary than people in the west believe. In particular, as you calm your mind and balance your emotions, you will notice fewer wrinkles and deep lines in specific areas of your face.

Facial Gua Sha Warm-ups

Let's get started

Before you begin, it's important to note that you should never do gua sha on your eyes, lips, tongue, nostrils,or near your ear canal.

If you have acne or raise skin features, do not massage over them. Instead, you will massage other parts of the body that will help these skin blemishes heal.

Just like with an exercise routine, you need to warm up tissues related to the areas your are going to massage. By loosening these areas first, you reduce the likelihood of bruising or breaking the skin.

As you do the head and face warm ups, you are also stimulating meridian points. This step starts the qi and blood flowing along the meridians, beginning the healing process.
