15-Day Yoga Mudra Challenge
Apana Vayu Mudra for a Healthy Heart & Heart Wisdom
Part of the Yoga Mudra Challenge — experience how daily guided mudra videos with Dr. Juli Kramer support healing, balance, and inner calm.
Duration: 14 minutes
Meaning and Purpose
Apana Vayu Mudra, the Gesture of the Downward Current of Energy, harmonizes the flow of prana through the heart and lower body. This traditional hand gesture supports the circulatory system, reduces chest tension, and nurtures emotional steadiness. Through calm awareness, it helps you connect with your heart’s inner guidance.
This page includes a guided video and meditation led by Dr. Juli Kramer. The practice offers clear instruction in hand placement, breathing, and reflection, creating a complete experience that soothes the body, relaxes the mind, and restores balance to the heart.
According to Yoga Journal, Apana Vayu Mudra can help regulate heart rhythm, calm anxiety, and balance energy during emotional stress.
How to Practice Apana Vayu Mudra
- Sit comfortably with an upright spine and relaxed shoulders.
- Touch the thumb to the tips of the middle and ring fingers.
- Fold the index finger to the base of the thumb, keeping the little finger extended.
- Rest your hands on your thighs, palms facing upward.
- Breathe slowly and evenly, softening the chest with each exhale.
Practice for 10–15 minutes, once or twice daily. You can also hold this mudra during the guided meditation to enhance relaxation and focus.
Heart Health and Emotional Balance
Apana Vayu Mudra strengthens the heart, steadies breath and pulse, and encourages calm circulation. On an energetic level, it teaches the art of balance—resting twice as much as you move—so that your efforts are sustained by renewal rather than fatigue. Over time, this practice cultivates peace, patience, and deep self-trust.
The Isha Foundation notes that mudras such as Apana Vayu Mudra help harmonize pranic flow, creating stability in both body and mind.
