Mira Mudra for Asthma and Easeful Breathing
Part of the Yoga Mudra Challenge — experience how daily guided mudra videos with Dr. Juli Kramer support healing, balance, and inner calm.
Duration: 16 minutes
Meaning and Purpose
Mira Mudra, the Gesture of Compassionate Breath, supports respiratory health and encourages deep, easeful breathing. This practice is especially helpful for people managing asthma, shortness of breath, or tension in the chest. It calms the nervous system, opens the lungs, and restores the natural rhythm of breath.
This page includes a guided video and meditation led by Dr. Juli Kramer. You’ll learn mindful breathing techniques and gentle awareness exercises that increase lung capacity and help you breathe more freely. In addition, you’ll experience how Mira Mudra releases emotional heaviness connected to the breath.
Yoga Journal explains that yoga and breathing awareness practices can reduce respiratory stress and improve oxygen flow in the body.
How to Practice Mira Mudra
- Sit comfortably with an upright spine and relaxed shoulders.
- Touch the tips of the thumb and little finger together, keeping the other fingers extended.
- Place your hands on your thighs, palms facing upward.
- Inhale deeply through your nose, expanding the ribs and chest.
- Exhale slowly, feeling the body soften with each breath.
You can hold this mudra for 10–15 minutes, or follow along with the guided meditation. As you continue, the breath becomes smoother, the chest lighter, and the mind more peaceful.
Healing Focus and Benefits
Mira Mudra strengthens the lungs and respiratory pathways, supporting a calm, steady flow of breath. It can help relieve asthma symptoms, improve oxygen circulation, and reduce anxiety. Moreover, this mudra balances the body’s air element, making it easier to release tension and breathe with comfort and confidence.
The American Lung Association notes that breathing exercises improve airflow, increase lung strength, and support respiratory health.
Integrating into the 15-Day Yoga Mudra Challenge
In the Radiant Shenti Yoga Mudra Challenge, Mira Mudra invites calm and compassion through every breath. Practice it when you feel anxious, breathless, or emotionally tight in the chest. Over time, you’ll experience a greater sense of openness, ease, and inner peace.
