Meaning and Purpose

Varuna Mudra, the Gesture of the Water Element, restores balance to the body’s fluids and supports the health of the urinary system. This practice helps relieve cystitis, soothe inflammation, and promote natural hydration throughout the tissues. Energetically, Varuna Mudra harmonizes the water element to encourage clarity, adaptability, and emotional ease.

This page includes a guided video and meditation with Dr. Juli Kramer. The practice offers gentle hand positioning, mindful breathing, and relaxation techniques to reduce irritation, support kidney and bladder function, and restore internal balance.

The National Kidney Foundation emphasizes that proper hydration supports kidney function and helps prevent urinary tract irritation.


How to Practice Varuna Mudra

  1. Sit comfortably with your spine upright.
  2. Touch the tip of the thumb to the tip of the little finger on each hand.
  3. Keep the remaining fingers relaxed and extended.
  4. Rest your hands on your thighs, palms upward, and breathe deeply through the nose.
  5. With each breath, imagine a cool, cleansing flow moving through your kidneys and bladder.

Hold for 10–15 minutes or during the entire guided meditation to deepen its healing effect.
